We’ve rounded up the best bathing suits to flatter your figure and help you feel better about your body in your bathing suit!

Which swimsuit should you be wearing?

Oh the irony! The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue hits newstands and mailboxes everywhere right around Valentine’s Day. Do I, personally, love to scoff at the (almost too) thin and (almost certainly) photoshopped models? Well, of course I do. But there’s no point in cursing the darkness when you can light a candle, right? That’s why we picked the brain of Toronto-based fashion stylist Claudia Da Ponte to get her best advice on selecting the right suit for every shape, including yours.

Curvy girls
Don’t try to hide your curves – find cuts that flaunt your assets! Da Ponte suggests opting for darker colour combinations to make your body appear longer, ruching details that distract from problem spots, a corset-style that smoothes you out and halter tops that draw the eye upward. To draw attention to a waist but minimize the tummy area, try a two-piece tankini.

Pear-shaped women
If you’re a little bottom-heavy, you’ll want to play up the top to even out your proportions. “Look for tops that have wider straps or colourful prints. If you can, keep the bottom half solid and try doing darker colours on bottom and lighter colours on top,” says Da Ponte. Look for pretty ruffles around the neckline or a one-shoulder strap for an interesting detail. When it comes to the bottom, look for higher cut which lengthens the legs.

Athletic divas
When we think of athletes, we imagine fit, toned bodies that would look sensational in any swimsuit. Not necessarily, says Da Ponte. “When you have an athletic build, you can kind of lose your waist and hips. By wearing a suit that’s cut higher up in the leg, you’ll look longer and leaner. A little ruching or a drop waist will define those hips.” Athletic girls can also pull off a sporty racerback suit that helps streamline their swim and make lap-swimming look infinitely attractive.

Sexy summer staples under $50

Summer is arguably the best season of the year for loading up on affordable, mix and match separates. And if you want to heat up those sultry nights, Fashion Stylist Claudia Da Ponte says it’s a snap to pick up everything you need for a sexy summer look for less than $50 for each piece.

Summer dresses
Step into just about any store – virtually or in person – this season and you won’t be able to miss a sensational selection of summer dresses at all price points. Da Ponte recommends investing in a few. “Summer dresses tend to be really trendy since we only wear them two months of the year. This means you can find them at any price. The key is to find a deal and the right fit for your body type.”

She recommends larger prints for larger women and vice versa for smaller women for a flattering, proportionate look. Busty women can rock a wrap dress or one with ruching up the waist. Those of us looking to shrink a tummy should invest in empire waist dresses. And women still working on those arms can choose a halter or racer back style dress to emphasize the face. “Maxi dresses are very in this year but stay away from them if you’re a shorter girl or wear them with higher heels. Shorter dresses that hit the knee are still great.”

 

Shop for: summer dresses under $50

Shorts
Da Ponte says shorts are available everywhere at reasonable prices and it is possible to find the right pair for your body type. “Mid-length shorts with a seven or eight-inch inseam tend to flatter all body types. Avoid knee-length shorts that will cut your leg in half visually.”

And if you want to vamp it up on those sexy summer nights, replace your flip flops with a pair of platform heels or wedges. “If you buy a nice, tailored pair of shorts, they can transition perfectly from day to night just by changing your shoes.” And when it comes to price, Da Ponte says sometimes the ones that cost the least last the longest. “I have a pair of shorts that I paid $30 for five years ago and they’re still going strong!”

 

Shop for: shorts under $50

Tank tops
Whether they’re slinky, silky or sporty, every woman needs a pile of tank tops in her wardrobe. “You can wear them on their own, throw on a cardigan or t-shirt, double them up – the options are limitless with tank tops,” confirms Da Ponte. Quite possibly the most affordable and versatile part of very wardrobe, the simple tank top can be found at all prices.

Check out Da Ponte’s guide to buying the right tank for your body type:

- If you have broad shoulders, go with a v-neck to bring the eye in
- If you have larger arms, choose a halter or thicker, more substantial straps to help shrink the look of the arm
- If you’ve got a boyish figure, look for open-back halters, strapless pieces or ones with ruching or a neck-tie across the front to add more curves
- If you have a bigger tummy, try baby doll tops which are always fashionable in summer

 

Shop for: tank tops under $50

Strappy shoes
We all have our favourite discount shoe places. And when it comes to summer sandals and strappy heels, it’s not hard to find several pairs at a bargain basement price. Da Ponte says platforms are the shoe of the season. “They add length and make you look sexy and amazing whatever you’re wearing. And they’re much more comfortable to walk in than stilettos.”

Wedges are another comfortable heel option and they pair well with casual shorts or maxi dress. “Wedges in cork or wood can be found anywhere right now and are right on trend,” says Da Ponte. And when it comes to casual sandals and flip flops, she recommends trying them on carefully before choosing even if they’re a great price. “There’s nothing worse than getting a cut between the toes from a rigid plastic thong. Go for something flexible and in a bright colour for fun, neutral to wear with anything.”

Four trends you won’t be able to avoid this spring

One of our favourite parts of the season of renewal is the fresh parade of exciting new fashion. We’re eager to shed our chunky knits and slip on a short-sleeved number and put away the winter boots in favour of a brand new pair of open-toed wedges. To find out how we can be on-trend this spring, we got some insider information from fashion stylist Claudia Da Ponte. Check out what she had to say about the trends you won’t be able to avoid in the milder weather!

Colour
The bright shades of new blooms in the garden have got nothing on the hot colours that are going to be found in fashion. “We’re seeing a lot of bright colours to offset the usual neutrals,” says Da Ponte. “This year the ‘it’ colour is definitely orange, but there will also be a lot of happy colours like magenta, warmer reds, neons, sea foams and emerald greens.”

Show off your sense of adventure by colour blocking (putting two opposing colours together) with clothes. “Try a different coloured top and bottom; orange and turquoise blue would look amazing together,” says Da Ponte, adding that she’s already seeing orange in blouses, dresses and t-shirts. “It’s one of those colours you really won’t be able to avoid.”

1970s
The groovy threads of the 1970s are making a comeback in a big way this spring, says Da Ponte. High-waisted jeans, palazzo pants and wide flares will be everywhere in a rainbow of colours. Admittedly, this is a tall woman’s trend, but Da Ponte says the ’70s style has something for everyone, including silky, satin Club 54 disco dresses and blouses with bows at the collars.

“We’re also seeing a lot of late ’70s, early ’80s sportswear like pantsuits and oversized blazers that can be paired with something feminine and a skinny belt so you don’t lose your shape,” she says. Pick up something that’s flattering to your body shape in a texture and colour that suits you.

Prints
Spice up your solids with a great print this season – you’ll have lots to choose from, including geometrics, watercolours, flowers and bold colours. “We’re seeing prints in tops, jumpsuits, shorts and dresses. And a lot of the maxi dresses from last season are back with bolder prints,” says Da Ponte.

“Stick with something neutral to pair with the print trend and stay away from horizontal stripes if you’re larger. When choosing the kind of print that’s right for you, consider how much you want to stand out. There’s definitely a selection for everyone this season.” If you want to be tame but fabulous, pair a print top with basic black trousers or skirt or try a neutral like beige, tan or white.

Wedges and other must-have shoes
While you’ll still find those comfy ballet flats, wedges are going to be where it’s truly at this spring. Strappy shoes from seasons past are still in style in a variety of different forms. Combine the wedge and the strappy trend and you’ve got a killer shoe that’s more comfortable than your standard issue high heel.

Colour will be as alive in footwear as it is on the rest of the body, says Da Ponte, who notes that orange will also feature heavily in shoes. Look for something playful and fun this spring. After all, after wearing clunky boots all winter, we deserve a little something whimsical, no?

We’re spilling secrets on how to find the perfect V-Day outfit for any occasion – on the cheap!

What are you wearing on Valentine’s Day?

Yes, we know that Valentine’s Day is a contrived holiday that exists only to sell greeting cards. We know that, without fail, it makes women feel unappreciated and men manipulated. But we also know that, stuck in the snowbank that is February, we will take any excuse we can get to make a cold and dreary day feel even a little bit special.

That’s why we sat down with fashion stylist Claudia Da Ponte to get her expert advice on how you can complement your Valentine’s Day plans with an inexpensive (because we haven’t forgotten our New Year’s resolutions) pick-me-up outfit. Break out the candy hearts and find out how to shop for less!

Staying in with someone special

Whether you’re cooking a meal together, ordering in or skipping food altogether, it’s fun to start out a home-based Valentine’s Day date with a seductive outfit that’ll cheer both of you up. Da Ponte says you can’t go wrong with a sexy cocktail dress or racy lingerie. “You don’t have to spend a fortune on a dress or lingerie to look amazing. Put on some heels and jewellery and something simple can be scandalous.”

PJ party with your girlfriends

If you’re single or just not the romantic type, you can use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to get together with friends and dish about all the reasons you’re glad to be unattached. And what a perfect opportunity to indulge in some sweet new PJs. “There are so many cute pajama options right now. I’m seeing a lot of pants and little tank tops at great prices that you can wear all year long,” says Da Ponte.

Casual dinner out

If nothing else, Valentine’s Day is a reason to make date night a touch more special. Instead of throwing on your favourite skinnies and oversized sweater for dinner at your favourite restaurant, Da Ponte recommends giving romance a nod by adding sexy elements to an otherwise simple outfit. “You don’t have to break the bank by getting a whole new outfit. Pick up an inexpensive shirt with ruffles or lace for a feminine touch and pair it with jeans or a pencil skirt. Add a chunky necklace or cuff bracelet, a brightly coloured clutch or a pair of pumps with maybe some toe cleavage to make it sexy.”

Doing it up

Maybe you’re celebrating an anniversary, it’s your first Valentine’s Day together or you just want something to break up the winter blahs. Whatever your motivations, going formal is a fun way to make February 14 stand out. Da Ponte says even when you’re doing something upscale, you don’t need a designer-priced dress. “Right now you can get dresses in every style at any price point. I would recommend getting something simple that accentuates your body type and then playing it up with accessories like great heels, a clutch and sparkling jewellery.” The best part? When February 15 rolls around, you’ve got some sweet additions to your workaday wardrobe.

Stretch your summer wardrobe

What if we told you that you that it’s possible to incorporate your skimpiest summer clothes into your winter wardrobe without shivering on your way to work? It turns out that this year’s hottest trends lend themselves to stretching your summer wardrobe (and your bank account) so you can invest in pieces that work with just about anything.

According to fashion stylist Claudia Da Ponte, tank tops, maxi dresses and even shorts and sandals have a place in your wardrobe this fall. Find out how to make them work for you!

Summer dresses

If you loved the maxi dress trend from spring and summer, you’ll be happy to learn that you can extend its wear well into fall. The trick is pairing it with the right jacket, sweater or blazer, says Da Ponte. “This season there are lots of blazers, leather jackets, knit and cashmere sweaters to choose from. Just make sure you’re adding a heavier fabric over a light one. And if you’ve got a bright-coloured maxi dress, make sure you’re adding a darker, more subdued fall colour on top.”

Da Ponte cautions that you’ve got to have the right footwear to take summer into fall. “In the summer we saw a lot of tunic dresses with gladiator sandals. You can still wear the dress, but definitely add heavier boots or clunky shoes to make it more fall/winteresque.” You can even put a long-sleeved shirt under your favourite summer tank dress. Add a belt and a pair of leggings and you’ve got a brand new look that works in cooler weather.

Mix and match colours

Summer colours tend to be more vibrant and lighter in tone, which are in contrast to the stark landscape come mid-fall. While not appropriate in a head-to-toe outfit, we can still pull in the sunnier shades from summer as great accent pieces in the fall or winter. “Bringing out a bright-coloured accessory in a great pink or bright green will help you from getting lost in the darker, especially black, colours of fall. Going back to summer accessories is a great way to give your wardrobe a little life,” says Da Ponte.

There are lots of great fall colours to choose from so you don’t need to swim in the shades of summer, cautions Da Ponte. “Try not to have more than one bright piece per outfit. Play it down with dark tones to cheat it in.” If you want more of a splash of zingy colour than an accessory can provide, bring out a summer top but tone it down a little with a black, brown, grey, purple, camel or navy that are all hot this year, she adds.

We won’t blame you for wanting to shriek at the mention of socks and sandals, but Da Ponte assures us that when done properly, this is a look that can’t miss this fall. “If you still want to wear shorts and want a look that’s very on trend, you can add textured tights or leggings underneath and make sure your peep-toe shoes or sandals have a heel. But this is not a license to break out gym socks with flip flops!”

Boots are another way to stretch summer shorts. They can be long and sleek or short and slouchy, just make sure you’re wearing the right tights to bring them together. “Higher boots are a great way to cheat with capri-length jeans – most people won’t even know you’re wearing capris. Just make sure the jeans are a dark or medium wash. Avoid light wash.”

Just add layers

If you’re holding onto summer tank tops or t-shirts with a great fit, feel free to keep wearing them with lots of layers. “The simplest way to start layering is by starting with a base tank top and adding a cardigan, military jacket, cashmere sweater… anything works. But you don’t want to end up bulky and out of shape – add a belt to give yourself a waist again if it’s getting chunky,” says Da Ponte.

If you haven’t invested in a great, dark-coloured blazer, now is the time. “A plain, simple black blazer with a tank top, jeans and boots is a wicked look,” says Da Ponte. For more flair, try mixing in an animal print in a scarf, pashmina or tights to any outfit. “Just keep it to one piece per outfit. Don’t overdo it,” cautions Da Ponte. Vests, gloves, hats and scarves can also simply mask summer wear you don’t look like you’re headed to the beach.

If we were to describe a coastal, melting pot of a city with a sprawling fashion scene, most people would assume we were talking about New York City. Well, we would actually be talking about Vancouver. The StyleList staff was eager to learn more about Vancouver’s style influence, so we asked our friends over at Assignment Fashion to enlighten us. The editors enlisted accomplished stylist Claudia Da Ponte to give them her top five favorite spots in Vancouver by neighborhood. With the help of fashion photographer Toranj Kayvon, the crew hit the streets and gave us a schooling in Canadian style.
